An Art of Letter Writing

Letter writing is a traditional form of communication. Nowadays there are different ways of communicating for sending messages but Letter writing also plays an important role for students till yet in the learning process. In second language learning SLA students, it plays important to learn the laws and rules of another language. So for English language learners, letter writing is a road map for beginners. Today I will explain the different parts of an informal letter.

Conventions of Letter writing are;

  •          Address and Date
  •          Greetings
  •          Main Body
  •          Closing

An Informal letter has five parts

1.               The Heading
2.       The Greeting
3.       The Body
4.       Closing
5.       Signature

Here we will elaborate the above steps completely step by step;

The Heading

It includes the return address and the date, for example:

Khayaban e sir Syed

IJB Road Rawalpindi

10 May 2011

The Greeting

The Greeting or salutation means “Hello”/ Assalam-o-Alaikum,

Dear Amina,

(All of the words used for greetings usually start with capital letters).

The Body

It has the message of the letter which is written inside.

Closing

It means “Goodbye”, your friend, etc.

Capitalize the first letter of the first word in the closing.

Signature

In your signature write your name.

Let’s take a quick revision,

·         An informal letter has five parts.

·         In informal letters, day-by-day language is used.

·         In informal letters, contractions can be used.

·         Notes and letters are usually written for invitations sending reminders, saying thanks, wishing to get well soon, etc.

For example, here is a template for the letter.

Zaman Town

I want to thank you for coming to my birthday party on Saturday. It was a great pleasure to see you. I hope that you had a good time. I have enjoyed a lot with my friends and family members. I got a lot of gifts. I love the toy car you brought for me.

Thanks once again!

Your friend,

Mohsin
